When Mr. Mathew Karyekattu and family returned from Germany in 1988 , he couldn’t find a special school for his differently abled son, in his home town Piravom or nearby place.
Compelled by the desire to provide training to his son, he sought the possibility of starting a special school at Piravom. The need was emphasized by the fact that a survey conducted in and around Piravom could locate about 300 mentally challenged children.
A meeting of persons interested in charity was convened. It decided to go ahead with the special school project
It gained momentum when Fr. Jacob Chollambel, Vicar of Holy Kings’ Church Piravom came forward with a promise to temporarily allot a vacant house owned by the church to start the school. The ‘Charitable society for the Welfare of the Disabled’ was formed and Fr. Jacob Chollambel became its first president.
People like Fr. Chacko Elavumparambil, Jacob Thumbayil, PV Thomas Pulikkeel, Mohan Das Mukundan, Pappen Nirappukattil, Paulose Mappila, Dr. Jacob Varghese, George Joseph C and a number of other prominent members of the society worked relentlessly along with Mathew Karyekattu for the initiation of the project.
The school Started functioning on in June 1989 . Bishop of Kottayam Diocese Rev. Dr, Kuriakose Kunnassery inaugurated the school and donated Rs.5000/-.
In 1992, 60 cents of land for the School was purchased using a Land Purchase fund raised by donations from the public. The land was filled in and leveled for construction. using donations from the public. Prominent among them were Rs. 47,000 donated by Mr. Mathew Karyakkatt and family and Rs 34580 donated by M/s Nobletech Construction Company Palarivattam .
Construction of school building started in 1995. Ms. Aleykutty Mathew Karyekattu collected a total of Rs 7 lakhs from organizations like Misourior and individuals like Fr.Stardur Bule, Ms. Philip Forebag in Germany. Sr. Corona , the first Principal of the School collected Rs. 2. lakhs from USA . The school started functioning in the new building in 1997.
First floor of the school could be constructed in 1998. SKN Netherlands donated Rs.9.7 lakhs. A mini bus could also be procured during the year.
Later, utilizing the MP LADS Funds of Mr. Varkey Mattathil MP and Mr. PC Thomas MP and the grant from Ernakulam District Panchayat, the Vocational Training Center, the first floor class rooms and second floor auditoriums were built.
Outer compound wall was built in 2007 using the fund provided by the District Panchayat.
Another School bus was purchased in 2008 using funds donated by the Rotary Club of Piravom and donations from the parents.
Snehabhavan received the ISO 9001-2008 accreditation in 2010 and became the first special school in Kerala to get the certification.
An open auditorium-cum- vehicle shed was built with MPLDS fund of Sri. K E Ismail. MP in January 2013.
A new Dining Hall for the Children was constructed with financial aid from the Members of Piravom Origin of St. Peters Orthodox Syrian Church Canada, and Mrs and Mr. Thomas Chacko Munduvelil ,USA
Sneha Bhavan is celebrating its Silver Jubilee Year starting the month of October 2013. Various programs are arranged to commemorate the event.
Donations from the Public, Sponsorships and grant from Govt. of India keep the school going. Today there are 106 differently abled persons get special education the school.
